In the current era of the Affordable Care Act, an economy and healthcare system in crisis, the incidence of disease (as well as obesity and the level of inactivity) on the rise, a confluence of interdicting factors exists. As such, the need for physician supervision, medical integration, and positive outcomes and accountability in health and wellbeing has never been more important. From the beginning, standards and guidelines have outlined the distinguishing factors of a Medical Fitness Center versus the traditional commercial fitness center, including, but not limited to, active and regular medical oversight, an organizational commitment to disease management and clinical integration, and a focus on helping improve community health.

We highly recommend each facility to order a copy of our Standard’s and Guidelines if they are pursuing our Facility Certification process. The certification is based upon this publication and the book features a set of nationally derived parameters that are applicable to the design and operation of a medical fitness center. Included are sample job descriptions; policies and procedures; and industry resources.

We are pleased to present the second edition of Standards & Guidelines for Medical Fitness Center Facilities. This global presentation of standards and guidelines is intended to provide basic parameters for the prudent operation of a medically integrated center. Ultimately, the standards and guidelines are designed to address two specific goals of the Medical Fitness Association: 1) to assist facilities in providing their members with a safe and medically sound experience that focuses us on the improvement of their health and wellbeing; and 2) to develop collaborative relationships with other professional bodies such as ACSM, AACVPR, and the American Kinesiotherapy Association (AKTA), in order to work together to develop parameters that are complementary and consistent with each other.
